Im a microbiologist from Leeds/Bradford, currently living in Sheffield. I love spending time with my family and friends, baking and walking. I am known to my friends as the restaurant queen as i visit cafes or restaurants most days. My fave food is pizza (closely followed by cake and cookie dough), my favourite animals are dogs (i hope i will own many someday)! Does shopping count as a hobby?
My pronouns are she/her 🙂

I started my PhD in microbiology in October 2020 – i am looking at a bug called C. difficile. I want to figure out how the antibiotics (drugs) kill C. difficile. This is tricky because it cant survive with oxygen present! This means i have to study it in a cabinet – a big plastic box that has no oxygen in. C. difficile is an important bacteria because it causes lots of problems in hospitals – it causes diarrhoea and can lead to death. Its also quite hard to treat because lots of antibiotics dont kill it so there are limited ways to treat it. Right now im making C. difficile that cant cause disease anymore by deleting bits of it.

My Typical Day:
I always walk to work, and try to start at 9am every day. I put on my lab coat and get my test tubes out ready to start my experiments on bacteria!
When i get home i like to relax and cook some food, read a book or chat with friends. -

Making bacteria that cant cause disease anymore is a lot harder than it sounds and involves a lot of experiments – it take months to complete from start to end! When i get into the lab my day is packed full of lots of small experiments, putting things into a bacteria called E. coli to transfer over to C. difficile, working with DNA, and making media (basically bacteria food) so that they will grow!
