Education:
My primary school was in a very little countryside village in Italy. Not many children around, so we were only 8 in my class! Secondary and high school were in a larger town instead. I always liked science, so I went to a high school called Liceo Scientifico in Italy, which mostly deals with science (sort of A-levels).
When it was the time to choose my university programme, I didn’t know what to pick, because I liked all chemistry, physics and biology, so I chose agriculture biotechnology, which has a little bit of everything. I later studied a PhD in nanotechnology. That’s why in the end I do nano-biotechnology, which is a mix of my degrees. -
Qualifications:
BSc and MSc in agriculture biotechnology, University of Udine, Italy
PhD in nanotechnology, University of Trieste, Italy
Postgraduate Certificate of Education, University of Lincoln -
Work History:
While studying I worked in an industrial laundry and did pick up and delivery of laundry and table clothes from hotels and restaurants.
During university I also worked in the university science library for about three years. In the library I learnt about the many available resources and read a lot!
My first job was in the laboratory of an agriculture regional agency in Italy where I was testing the DNA of crops and food to check if it was contaminated with genetically modified organisms. There, I started looking into how nanoscience can be used to detect traces of molecules in food.
Later I worked in the labs of a nanoscience institute at the border between Slovenia and Italy. The institute had collaborators all over the world, so I travelled a lot and started collaborating with a lab in Cambridge, to where later I moved.
I moved to Cambridge to work in the Medical Research Council, Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
Finally, from there I moved to Lincoln where I currently work. -
Current Job:
I work for the University of Lincoln. I’m a senior lecturer and programme leader. I teach, primarily biochemistry and lead a masters programme called MSc Biotechnology. I also do research in nanobiotechnology.
-
About Me:
I always loved to learn new things and never stopped doing so, really. If I haven’t learnt anything new in a day, even the smallest thing, I don’t feel right.

I was born in Italy and I moved to the UK about 12 years ago. I live in Lincoln with my wife and my 6 years old son. We like cooking fresh food, nearly every day, and experiment in the kitchen. The kitchen to me is very similar to a lab.

My studies are in a field called nano-biotechnology, which is the merge of biotechnology and nanotechnology. Nanotechnology and nanoscience deal with things that are the size of tens to thousands of atoms, for example nanoparticles. Interestingly, proteins and nanoparticles can have comparable sizes and they interact together. For example, specific proteins made to bind gold nanoparticles are used in diagnostic kits such as the pregnancy test or the rapid coronavirus tests. I study the biochemistry of the proteins binding nanoparticles.

My Typical Day:
I like to start working early and finish late, if I can, so that I can dedicate enough time to do well the things that I like to do: teaching and working in the biochemistry lab.

I teach biochemistry and biotechnology to several groups of students. Sometimes the teaching happens in teaching laboratories and I think these are more fun than normal classes. I spend some time to deal with the administration of a masters programme in biotechnology, which I lead. This involves a lot of talking to students and other lecturers in the course.
I supervise the research projects of masters and PhD students. This means helping them in the lab and with the analysis of the data.
Supervision of PhD students
Late in the day, when the laboratory gets quiet, I like to do my own experiments, unless I’m busy preparing presentations for scientific conferences or writing papers for scientific journals.
