Great question! I did 4 years at the University of York which included a placement year working at a pharmaceutical company in California. The usual number of years to get a bachelors degree is 3 but doing the extra placement year was good work experience which helped me to get my PhD at the University of Manchester! My PhD will take me 3.5 years to complete and then after that I will have a doctorate degree (meaning I will get to be called Dr. Felicity Hunter). You do not need a masters degree or a PhD to get a job in science though. Many great science companies will hire you for a job in science after you finish your 3 year bachelors degree (and some only require level 3 qualifications – the equivalent to A levels). So it is really up to you how much time you want to do at University depending on the type of science job you want to do 🙂

I studied Veterinary Medicine in Mexico City, that was 5 years of undergraduate studies. I think most programmes for Veterinary Medicine in the world also last 5 years.

Hi. I actually did what is called a dual degree when I first went to university because I couldn’t decide what I wanted to study. So instead of doing one degree in 3 years, I did two degrees at the same time but took 4 years to finish. Then I did 1 year of research. After working for a bit I went back to university to do a master’s degree which was another 2 years. So in total I was at university for 7 years but this is longer than most people.

I was at university for about 8 years all up. My bachelor degree was 3 years, which I followed up with another 1 year for an optional honours project. I then started a PhD which took me about 3.5-4 years to finish.

I am on a placement year which is technically my third year of university. Once I finish my placement, I will have another year of university so it will be 4 years in total 📅

I did a 4 years Masters in Chemistry, which included a year placement where I got to see what it was like to work as a scientist!
