Years ago when I worked at Diabetes UK I travelled around the UK giving talks about the research we funded, and one of my trips was to Orkney which is a series of islands off the North Coast of Scotland. It’s a beautiful place and I visited it a week after midsummer – at 11pm at night it was still almost daylight outside!

Orkney has its own annual Science Festival (it was online last year) and I try and get to visit it in person every few years. They also have a wonderful Wireless Museum – it’s not about wifi but about the history of early radio communications (at home and also military use) so they have some really old equipment.

I don’t know any of the scientists here, no – though some of them might know each other. I recognise some names but haven’t met them in person (at least I don’t think I have – though we might have attended some science events or conferences at the same time).
