I love being a scientist because it’s interesting, I’m always learning new things and it’s so satisfying when an experiment goes well! I also really like having a mixture of lab work and desk work in my job.

I like being a scientist because I always get to do and learn new things. I pick things that no-one has done before and I try to do them. It’s often hard work but it is very fun!

I like being a scientist as my job is very exciting and interesting. I do a lot of different things from day to day so my job is never boring. It’s a really great feeling when you find out the result of a new experiment that you have designed and you realise that something is working the way that you thought it was.

The sense of the unknown! Everyday we are working towards contributing to human knowledge, to determining how something works! You take projects from a start and the satisfaction that you get once it is finished is phenomenal, all the hard work pays off and the world understands something a little more!

I like being a scientist because I get to work with people from all around the world. I have been able to meet and work with people from lots of different countries in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. Even if you can’t always work face-to-face the internet means we are able to collaborate with people from everywhere and share our ideas.

I like learning about new things and working in science is probably a pretty good place for that as there are always new discoveries to learn about from the smallest physical particles to trying to understand the largest things in the galaxy. I remember going to lectures at uni when I was studying how cells signal to each other and just thinking wow, I sat and watched the Perseverance rover land on Mars this year knowing that there is loads of amazing technology that got it there and thought wow and I just keep on learning and reading about lots of other amazing things in science.

Science is like a puzzle and I love puzzles! I love being able to work things out and finding out something I never knew before. I also get to work with incredible people who have a passion for science just like me.

I love how many different things I get to do – looking at skeletons, computer programming, archaeological digs, teaching, writing… It keeps me interested! (even if I don’t always enjoy all of it)
Also, I think it’s just so cool that I could discover something totally new in my research that no one has found out before.

I love having the illusion that my work will one day help to keep animals and people healthy. I really like the challenges of having to come up with creative ways of solving problems, and I really love being in a constant learning process. I do not like, though, that I am very shy and it’s hard for me to network (especially in these times of pandemic); which is an important skill for scientists.

Thanks for the great question. Science is all about discovering new things that nobody in the world knows yet and that could benefit human kind which I find really exciting. I love to come up with new ideas for experiments as it is very creative. It is also very rewarding to contribute towards information that could eventually benefit people suffering from diseases and to make the world a better place to live.
